Innovative approach to bad weather for funeral homes

Snowstorms have hit East Tennessee and Southwest Virginia with unexpected weather and delayed businesses, government, and schools from opening. One thing though that cannot be delayed is the death of a loved one. Funeral homes must find ways to provide their services even in the worst of weather. Typically arrangements are made shortly after the passing and services scheduled. When fowl weather hits unexpectedly causing a delay in a public visitation or service there has not been a good way to notify those attending outside of the immediate family. Sure we publish another update in the newspaper obituaries however those wishing to attend have to wait till its printed to find out there has been a change.

Trinity Memorial Centers Funeral Home has a computer programmer on staff. Seeing first hand how there wasn’t an existing solution we have created an innovative approach to notifications. Taking the opportunity for a few hours when we were snowed in we wrote software to create the Funeral Text Alerts System. This system is part of our expanding line of software internally written to make funeral homes more efficient. Those wishing to attend a service can signup on the obituary page on Trinity Memorials Funeral Home website. It’s not just for bad weather either, often times you will see an incomplete obituary notice where arrangements haven’t been made yet, now you can signup and be notified when arrangements are announced. The system is part of a funeral management software package we are developing for funeral homes across America to utilize.

It’s just another way Trinity Memorial Centers Funeral Home utilize technology to provide better services and stay on the cutting edge of the funeral industry.

Trinity Memorial Funeral Home is honored to announce the completion of its latest renovations. After a year of working with City officials, Zoning officials, EPA, State Board, and local contractors we are excited to announce the opening of Kingsport’s first Crematories in the City Limits.

Crematory Care Center and Petcare Cremations are now operating at Trinity’s main facility to allow us to serve your whole family. As Trinity has grown over the past 8 years to now serve over 450 families a year and with the increase in cremation in our area we felt now was the time to expand.

Crematory Care Center is complete with a witness room for families to hold special ceremonies to meet their religious needs or to have a private committal before the cremation takes place. We have designed the state of the art facility with our families in mind. Peaceful music and contemporary design insure your loved one is cared for in the most dignified way. Those considering cremation are always welcome to tour our facility to see how well kept and professional it is. We also welcome other funeral homes to use our facilities for the care of their loved ones.

Petcare Cremations is Kingsport’s first crematory in the city limits as well. “It was really important to me as a pet owner to provide the same level of care we do for human members of the family to our furry pets” says Weston. “We wanted to be able to have this service available 24×7 with in-home pickup or vet available and to have a dedicated office and keepsake showroom to meet with families. We even created the area’s first Pet Hearse to provide a higher level of dignity to our service.” Petcare offers not only affordable private cremation services with same day – 24 hour turnaround we also offer in-house engraving and polished etched headstone design for those who wish to bury their pets. “We have a fantastic staff who are all pet owners and very compassionate” says General Manager for Petcare. The process began almost 2 years ago as we had to work with city officials to change zoning laws and get permits. Prior to the changes crematories were only allowed in industrial zones which we felt was undignified for our families. According to National Funeral Directors Association, most funeral homes transport to crematories run by third parties outside city limits or city industrial zones as very few have on-site facilities due to the investment costs and space required.

Our crematories are state-of-the-art facilities and over 3,000 sq ft. We utilize a unique tracking system that not only uses a unique number as mandated by state law we also engrave your loved ones name onto the permanent metal identification tag so you can rest assured the cremains you receive are those of your loved one.

We also have a stock of contemporary and classic urns available that can be etched in house so you can receive your loved ones cremains back without delay.

Family loses all in a house fire – help us provide them with the essentials

All of their belongings are gone. Plus two vehicles. Thank God no one was home. As the family was on a camping trip. They are in need of help. The kids need clothing toys etc. They’re going to have to start from scratch.

Don Wright is a true legend in this part of the world. He’s helped many people in wrestling the last 50plus years. Due to a tragic situation a few years ago Don and his wife Sandy are raising 5 of their grandkids. They lost everything yesterday in a house fire.

Red Cross has provided them only with a hotel room for now.

Please bring toiletries, clothing, school supplies, or financial donations for food and their motel stay till they find permanent place. Donations can be dropped off at Trinity Memorial Funeral Home, 1221 Stewball Circle Kingsport, TN 37660 Monday – Friday 9-5pm. We will also be having a fundraiser at the Model City Event Center in August. Stay tuned.

During the month of March we will be taking donations of canned good items at various drop off locations. These items will then delivered to Second Harvest Food Bank in honor of the late Buster Watts.

Buster passed away in May of 2015. He had a servants heart. He volunteered for many organizations such as AARP, American Red Cross, Second Harvest Food Bank, Shades of Grace homeless ministry, Indian Path Volunteers, Barter Theater, RAM, and also was instrumental in bringing R. Hero to the downtown fire department. He was a member of the Shades of Grace United Methodist Church.

Free Community Thanksgiving Dinner

Kingsport, Tennessee-

Hunger First is gearing up for its third annual Thanksgiving dinner and is inviting anyone who needs a meal or just the company of others to come join them.

It will be held Thanksgiving Day from 2-5 p.m. at Trinity Memorial Funeral Home’s new downtown Model City Event Center, located at 231 Commerce St. in downtown Kingsport. People do not have to arrive exactly at 2 p.m. to receive food. They can also get to-go boxes if they do not want to stick around for the fellowship.

The no-questions asked, free store started hosting the event after founder Cindy Risk died in a car wreck. The idea to host a Thanksgiving dinner came when her three children did not want to have Thanksgiving without her.

“It started when me, my brother and my sister didn’t want to be home because Mom wasn’t going to be home,” said Michael Gillis, Hunger First executive director. “We were grateful enough that we got every single holiday to spend with her for a full year. We had talked about it and (a Thanksgiving dinner) is what we wanted to do.”

Approximately 120 people attended the event last year. Gillis said he is preparing for even more people to attend this year.

Gillis said the dinner is not just for homeless or the people Hunger First takes care of. He said the event is for anybody who wishes to attend, including people who are lonely and looking for some companionship on the holidays or have nothing to cook at home.

Volunteers will arrive at the Outdoorsmen Club early Thanksgiving morning to start preparing the food. It will then be transported over to the Model City Event Center where it will be served. Last year, Hunger First prepared 15 turkeys for the dinner.

Dishes served on that day include turkey, mashed potatoes, gravy, green beans, corn, stuffing, dressing, rolls, potato salad, pumpkin pie and apple pie, among other items. Any leftovers will be given to those who ask for it.

Gillis said the dinner would not be possible without the help of a number of people. He would like to thank the gentlemen at the Outdoorsmen, Howard Reynolds and his family, Weston Leonard owner of Trinity Memorial Funeral Home who is donating use of their new downtown Model City Event Center, members of Harvest Community Church, Jeremy Jones, who owns Woodstone Deli, Phil’s Dream Pit, East Tenn Rent-Alls/Celebrate and all the volunteers past and present.

“This event would not be able to happen on this level without them,” he said. “We could not do this without the help of all the people involved.”

1. T ake a Veteran out to eat; whether it is a fast-food chain or a fine-dining establishment.

2. Are you a knitter or crocheter? Make a scarf for the cold-winters ahead. Donate them at a local-VFW for a veteran in need or contact Operation Gratitude to see how to donate.

3. Listen to their stories with interest. If they are a war-veteran they have seen things you will never see. Listen and Learn.

4. Call and Visit a local nursing home or VA Hospital. Find out what you can do to help. If you quilt make a blanket for a needy veteran. If you bake call and find out if you can bring in something special. Bring a book to read to a veteran “ready and willing” to listen. We all have talents that can be used.

5. Send an ‘E-Card‘ through the American Legion to the Veterans in your life that use email.

6. Support a Military Family through Operation Homefront. Watch their website for ‘current needs’: http://www.operationhomefront.net/need/list

7. Military-member at the same restaurant as you? Send them a drink or pay for their dessert.

8. Do you have a website? Make a page dedicated to our military. Need some help finding content for it?: For your site

10. Employers: Host a special luncheon for all of your veterans. Recognize their service to your company and your country.

11. See a veterans group selling poppy flowers? Purchase and wear one. Proceeds made from these sales many times go to disabled, needy, and aging veterans in VA hospitals, State veterans homes and domiciliary across the country.

12. Call them. A grandparent, uncle, aunt, mother, father. Take the time to call them, especially if they live far away, and find out how they are doing.

13. Send a note to your local school to urge the teachers to discuss Veterans Day. Visit Veterans’ Day Teacher Resource Guide for some tips.

14. Recognize the Veterans in church on the Sunday before or after Veterans Day

21. Teachers: Invite a Veteran to speak at your school, in a class room or to the entire school.

22. Pray for them and their families, every day.

29. Open up your house on Thanksgiving or another holiday to a few veterans (active-duty or prior-service) that don’t have any family in the area. Make it a holiday none of you will forget.

41. Teachers: Have your students write short articles of how veterans are honored around the world. And if you know any veterans locally, propose that your kids interview them about what it’s like to serve in the U.S. military.

42. Participate in the ‘Veterans History Project‘

43. Are you a military-brat? Talk to your parents about the pride you have in their service

44. Hear the National Anthem playing? Stop what you are doing and think about the sacrifices of our US Military.

45. Wear an American flag on your clothing. It’s a small way to say, “I am proud of my country.”

46. Introduce your children to VA Kids, from the Department of Veterans Affairs.

47. Have a pot-luck, at church or a banquet hall, for a group of local veterans. Invite the community to participate.

48. Listen to them. Some just want to share a story from their service

49. Vote. Don’t let them sacrifice for naught. Be a good citizen and do your part to protect the freedoms our service-people have fought and died for.

50. Dedicate a patriotic song in a veteran’s honor on the radio.

51. Tell your children all about your Veteran-grandparents. What made them special and what they did as a Veteran. Pass on a legacy.

52. Do you see a Veteran with a service related ball cap on? Use it to strike up a conversation about their service.

53. Pass out small flags around your neighborhood in honor of Veterans Day.

54. Support the children of deployed National Guard and Reserve soldiers. Fund raise or contribute to ‘Our Military Kids‘

55. What can you do for our Homeless Veterans? Organizations like the Home Depot Foundation, Volunteers of America, and The Mission Continues are great groups that you can help with.

56. Give them a big smile as you walk by, sometimes that is all that is needed.

57. If you see a veteran with an old flag on their pole leave them a new one, with a note of thanks for their service.

58. Visit a veteran’s grave. Even if you simply stand there for a moment of quiet reflection, you’re honoring their service–and you’re rededicating yourself to the freedoms we enjoy as a citizen of this country.

59. Find out which businesses in your community truly support veterans and the troops; become their customer, and tell them you appreciate their support to veterans.

60. Do you know the mom or dad of a veteran? Thank them for raising one of America’s Heroes.

61. Ask your local VFW, American Legion or local Veterans Group if you can make a donation, either by money or donation of your time. If you have a family member that serves in the armed forces you could make a donation in their honor.

65. Order a shnazzy t-shirt or perhaps a tie that shows your thankfulness. Have one sent to a veteran in your family.

66. Thanking the Spouse is a Thank You to the Veteran.

67. During a family reunion recognize the veterans in your family. A special toast or a big family “Thank you!”

68. Find out how you can help with a Community Service Project through your local VFW.

69. Organize a group (boys scouts, girl scouts, classroom) to write letters to veterans. Bring the letters and cards to a local nursing home to be delivered to their vets.

70. Greet them on their special day with a smile and a thank you.

71. Support our troops this holiday season via ‘Red Cross Holiday Mail for Heroes‘ program. Find out more here.

72. Read some of the veterans’ stories at DAV Charitable Service Trust. This is just a small sample of the sacrifices our service-members have made for us throughout the generations.

73. Is it still warm where you live? Treat a veteran to a round of golf on Veterans Day or the weekend before or after.

74. Attend a local parade or ceremony on Veterans Day

75. Make a tax-deductible donation to ‘Books For Soldiers‘. They send books and other care-packages to our deployed service-members.

76. Help a veteran with projects around his or her house. Patching a leaky roof, moving heavy rocks or rearranging the living room furniture is easier for the 20-somethings than a 60-somethings.

77. Make a lunch date: Take your veteran-colleague out for lunch.

78. Learn more about resources available to our homeless veterans.

79. Remember Veterans during other holidays, especially those without family. Send a Thanksgiving card, Christmas card or Valentines card, to either a Vet that you know or through a VA Hospital or VFW.

80. Learn to say Thank You in sign-language. The Gratitude Campaign.

81. Take pride in our history, in times of war and peace.

82. Ask your company to display a flag with lights at night. Offer to help with raising and lowering the flag.

83. Offer to take a veterans dog for a walk. Invite them to come along with you if they can.

84. Know a veteran’s hobby? Send them a subscription to a related magazine.

85. Offer to babysit for a veteran-military family. Let the husband and wife get out together on Veterans Day or over the weekend. Perhaps it will be a great opportunity for them to reconnect after a deployment. (Active Duty Families have you heard of SitterCity? The DoD offers a free membership for you.)

86. Contribute your time, talent or money to Fisher House™ Foundation, “comfort homes,” built on the grounds of major military and VA medical centers.

87. Get involved and send a service-person a care package. Go to http://www.soldiersangels.org/ for a list of organizations with projects to support servicemen and servicewomen and their families.

88. Donate your airline mileage to the Hero Miles program.

89. Business Owners: What kind of Veterans Day special are you having for your Veterans? Is it from the heart?

90. If you meet a veteran on this Veteran’s Day, or any day, just say thanks. They served you, and this nation, well.

91. Learn more about ‘Honor Flight Network‘ and how you can help with this wonderful support for World War II Veterans. I have a close friend whose dad is a WW II Vet and participated in a trip to DC through Honor Flight. Karen tells me it was an /amazing/ and indescribable experience for her dad. Definitely an opportunity that I stand behind! But it can’t continue without volunteers /like you/.

92. Visit Homes for Our Troops and learn if there are plans to build a home for in your area for a disabled Veteran. You can help with fundraising, skilled labor, or a contribution through the CFC.

93. Own a business? Hang a sign and invite all veterans in for something free. A cup of coffee, a flower, a massage. Something you can give from your inventory to show your gratitude.

94. Donate to or volunteer for a service-dog training program like Patriot PAWS Service Dogs or VetDogs that is geared for injured-veterans returning from war.

95. Another related idea, learn the etiquette of being around an assistance-dog so that if you meet a disabled vet and his companion you know how to treat them both with respect

96. Create a tribute to a veteran that you want to honor at USAA’s Wall of Honor.

97. Participate in “school drives” or start your own school drive for our deployed-troops or veterans. If your child brings home a flier or announcement from the school or PTA requesting donations for the troops participate. Pick up a few things for your child to bring in. She’ll feel good about participating and you will feel good for helping our deserving military-members.

98. What various military support organizations are in your own neighborhood? The VFW and the American Legion are two great examples.

99. The USO serves thousands of Thanksgiving meals each year to deployed-troops. You can help with a financial contribution of as little of $5.

One in Five Elderly Americans Dies Broke Survey Shows

It’s the biggest financial worry for anyone saving for retirement: will I outlive my savings and die broke?

Based on surveys repeatedly pointing to dismally low levels of retirement savings, most American households have reason to be concerned. The latest report on how many Americans die broke comes from an analysis by the Employee Benefits Research Institute based on data from the University of Michigan’s Health and Retirement Study.

Of those 85 or older who died between 2010 and 2012, roughly one in five had no assets other than a house, according to the analysis. The average home equity was about $140,000. Roughly one in eight of those households had no assets at all.

Those who died single at 85 or older fared worse, roughly a quarter had only some equity in a house — about $83,000 on average. One in six had nothing, and one in 10 died with an average debt of about $6,000.

For those who died at a younger age, the numbers were even worse. Some 30 percent of households losing a family member between ages 50 and 64 had no assets left. Those households also had lower incomes than older retirees.

Trinity serves country breakfast buffet to homeless

East Tennessee has seen some of the worst weather in a while with a bitter cold front that lasted almost 6 days with temperatures reaching into the negative numbers. Our friends at Shades of Grace in Downtown Kingsport setup a temporary shelter for the past 6 days for anyone to get in from the cold. Trinity cares deeply for the community especially those in need so imagine how delighted we were to be able to provide an immediate need for the Church.

This morning we were able to be blessed by serving a country style breakfast and get to know some of those staying at the shelter. Our hearts go out as we are called to serve others for what is faith without works. So many want to work but it is hard to get back on your feet and apply for a job without a permanent address. So if you are reading this post, I would challenge you to look for small ways you can help your fellow neighbors. To do unto the least is to do unto the Lord.

In the Old and New Testaments, we see God’s desire for His children to show compassion to the poor and needy. Jesus said that the poor would always be with us (Matthew 26:11; Mark 14:7). He also said that those who show mercy to the poor, the sick, and the needy are in effect ministering to Him personally (Matthew 25:35–40) and will be rewarded accordingly.

Jesus commanded us to love one another (John 13:34–35). And what better way to demonstrate the love and kindness and compassion of Jesus Christ than by reaching out to the “least of these” among us?

What to do with your Parent’s Facebook After they Die

Some people are very upfront with their wishes when they die, most don’t really share much with or think about it. Who wants to think about their death? For those that do have the “talk” with their parents a lot of things are discussed like burial or cremation, living wills, and Do Not Resuscitate orders, etc… One thing though that is rarely even thought about is what to do with your parents online footprint. Do they use twitter, Facebook, emails, etc… So let’s take a moment to explore.

First you should probably establish what accounts they have. Then figure out what is important and what is useless. Think about that for a moment, your Facebook account contains some of your most treasured moments captured in still digital pixels and typography. Funny quips and life trips, interactions with friends and family alike.

Now that you have established the list and hopefully learned a little bit more about your parents social media life we can start the next step. Focus on each service however we will focus on Facebook as the primary example. We all probably know someone who passed away and their Facebook profile is still sitting untouched, notifying you when there birthday is, sometimes even inviting you to interact with them. To some this can be a disturbing reminder of a friend lost.

So let’s look at the options. First and foremost the best thing to do is use a service like LastPass to have your parents store all their logins for websites then share the master password with you or the executor of their will.

Focusing on Facebook we see their are three options when someone dies. Memorializing the account, deleting the account, or downloading the contents of the account.

1. Memorializing > This method method leaves the profile up with all its photos and posts however it disables notifiers and other options of including the “person” in interactions. Basically letting Facebook and other users know this person has passed. This is a great idea for letting future generations learn more intimately about their relative, to experience their joys, and mundane day to day discussions.

2. Deleting the account > Perhaps you don’t feel comfortable with the information out their so deleting the account is an option. To do this option you must notify Facebook and they will verify the information and remove the account.

3. Downloading the information then deleting. Facebook will provide the posts, photos, etc.. in a digital download then will remove the profile.

Just like funeral arrangements can be hard, trying to figure out your parents digital social media wishes can be a challenge (or fight) between siblings. It’s better to find out from your parents their wishes now so you can honor them.
