A Lifetime of Service, A Legacy of Honor

Anthony "Tony" Dean Dangerfield, 65, of Roan Mountain, Tennessee, passed away on Thursday, October 8, 2026, leaving behind a remarkable legacy of service, dedication, and love for his family.

For Tony, service was more than a profession. It was a calling that would define much of his life. From the proud traditions of the United States Navy to the demanding responsibilities of law enforcement, he devoted decades of his life to protecting others, upholding the law, and serving his country and community with honor.

Born on January 1, 1961, to Carl and Patricia Dangerfield, Tony began his extraordinary journey of service at just 17 years old when he enlisted in the United States Navy. What began as a young man's decision to serve his country grew into a distinguished military career. Through hard work, discipline, and dedication, Tony earned the rank of Chief Petty Officer, a position reflecting both leadership and the respect he had earned throughout his service.

During his time in the Navy, Tony had the distinguished honor of serving as a member of the Presidential Honor Guard. His military career also included assignments to multiple specialized task forces, including Defense Intelligence and Drug Interdiction. These responsibilities reflected the trust placed in him and his commitment to carrying out his duties with professionalism and integrity.

When his military service came to an end, Tony's desire to serve others did not.

In 1987, he began his journey in law enforcement as an Auxiliary Officer with the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office in Florida. He later joined the Clay County Sheriff's Office as an Auxiliary Deputy at the age of 34, beginning what would become an accomplished and deeply meaningful career with the department.

After transitioning into a full-time deputy position, Tony steadily rose through the ranks, serving as Sergeant and Lieutenant with responsibilities overseeing both patrol operations and criminal investigations. His leadership and experience eventually led to his appointment as Captain, and he concluded his law enforcement career retiring as a Chief.

Each rank represented more than a promotion. It reflected years of responsibility, difficult decisions, long hours, and an unwavering commitment to the oath he had taken.

Tony took tremendous pride in his career in law enforcement. The badge he wore was never simply a symbol of authority, but a reminder of the responsibility entrusted to him. Throughout his years of service, he understood the importance of leadership, loyalty, and standing beside those who shared his commitment to protecting their communities.

Yet beyond the uniforms, the ranks, and the accomplishments was a man whose greatest legacy would be found in the lives of those who knew and loved him.

To his family, he was not simply a Navy Chief or a law enforcement officer. He was a husband, father, grandfather, brother, and the familiar presence they knew as Tony. The titles he earned throughout his career spoke to his professional accomplishments, but the place he held in his family's hearts was something no rank or recognition could ever replace.

His life was one marked by duty, perseverance, and service. Few people dedicate so many years to answering the call to protect and serve, first for their nation and then for their community. Tony did both, leaving behind a legacy worthy of remembrance and respect.

Though his final watch has ended, the honor of his service and the love he leaves behind will endure.

Tony was preceded in death by his mother, Patricia Worstell, and his father, Carl Dangerfield.

Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife, Melinda Dangerfield; daughter, Mia Dangerfield; son, Jason Dangerfield; daughter, Calista Howard; and grandson, Owen Dangerfield.

He is also survived by his four brothers, Carl Dangerfield, Dale Dangerfield, Christopher Dangerfield, and James Dangerfield; his sister, Trish Smith; and his beloved four-legged companion, Bob the Dog.

His family, friends, fellow veterans, and brothers and sisters in law enforcement will forever remember a man who dedicated so much of his life to serving others.

Above all, he was a man with a heart of gold. He was the kind of person who would do anything for anybody and drop everything in a moment's notice to help a friend in need. His generosity, kindness, and willingness to always be there for others were a reflection of the man he was and the love he carried in his heart.

But as much as he cared for others, his family was his pride and joy. They were the center of his world, his greatest blessing, and what mattered most to him. The love he had for his family was immeasurable, and the memories, lessons, and love he leaves behind will continue to live on in the hearts of those who knew him and most importantly his family.
