Gary Clayton Childers

Gary Childers, aged 65, of Kingsport, TN, passed away September 2, 2026.

Gary was known for his sense of humor and work ethic. He was very proud of the training he received through the Building Owners and Managers Association (BOMA) which helped him build a successful career as an Operating Engineer.

Gary was blessed to be the father of Stephanie Brooks, Kara Wise, Jonathan Childers and was overjoyed at the birth of his first grandchild, Griffin. He and his wife Joy, who remarried in 2018, were grateful they could reunite and bring their family together again.

He had many passions in his life and he shared his love of Nascar and baseball with his family. Gary was a native of San Diego, the son of Jon and Barbara Childers, and the brother of Laurie Gordon. Gary worked with his father in the building trade. He gained a love of sports and conversation from his mother who was a journalist and sportswriter.

Gary loved and supported his family so they could be their best. He was a stay-at-home dad for a time by working part-time jobs; the most fitting was as the children's party clown "Bongo".

He went too soon and now there is a hole where his infectious humor dwelled.

A memorial celebrating his life will take place in late October to be followed in 2027 with a military internment of his ashes.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in his memory to Bloomingdale Baptist Church, Kingsport TN.
