James "Jimmy" Dye, of Kingsport, TN, and formerly of Gate City, VA, passed away on Thursday, October 9, 2025, surrounded by his loving family.

Jimmy was born on July 12, 1944, at Holston Valley Hospital to JC and Mildred Dye. He graduated from Gate City High School in 1962 and went on to earn a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from East Tennessee State University in 1967, followed by a master's degree in 1974.

On October 19, 1968, he married the love of his life, Nancy, at Oak Glen Baptist Church in Yuma, VA. Together, they welcomed their daughter, Kelly, on November 17, 1977.

Jimmy ("Mr. Dye") taught chemistry, physics, and mathematics at Gate City High School for 33 years, where he impacted generations of students with his knowledge, patience, and passion for learning. He also served as a deacon and longtime Sunday school teacher at First Baptist Church of Weber City. A lifelong learner with an insatiable curiosity, Jimmy had many interests, including gardening, model trains, genealogy, and the history of the region. His legacy lives on in the lives of the many students he taught and inspired over the years.

He was preceded in death by his parents, JC and Mildred Dye.

Jimmy is survived by his wife of nearly 57 years, Nancy, of Kingsport; his daughter, Kelly (Dave) Buetow, of Grand Blanc, MI; and his brothers-in-law, Jack (Pearl) Collins and Don (Karen) Collins.

Per his wishes, cremation has taken place, and there will be no formal services.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Foundation Fighting Blindness or a charity of your choice.
