Listen to Obituary

James "Jimmy" Richard Matherly, 62, of Elizabethton, TN, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, March 8, 2026.

Born in Elizabethton, Tennessee, Jimmy spent most of his life in the community he loved. He attended Johnson County High School and later studied at ETSU. Jimmy was a member of Little Milligan Baptist Church, where his beliefs and values helped guide the way he lived his life.

Jimmy was known as a hardworking and skilled craftsman. He worked as a cabinet maker and also spent many dedicated years at Hampton Print Textiles. He took great pride in working with his hands and creating things that would last.

Outside of work, Jimmy found joy in the simple pleasures of life. He loved fishing, spending time at the range, and tending to his garden. He was proud of the delicious tomatoes he grew each season. Jimmy also had a special place in his heart for his beloved dogs, Molly and Taz, who were his loyal companions and brought him much happiness.

More than anything, Jimmy loved his family and friends. He cherished time spent with those close to him and was known for his kind heart and easygoing nature.

He was preceded in death by his son, James McNulty; his wife, Margaret Garland Matherly; his brothers, Jeffrey Matherly and Michael Matherly; his grandparents, Dana and Ida Matherly and Dave and Ethel Rainbolt; his stepfather, Thomas Penix; and several aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Those left to cherish his memory include his mother, Brenda Penix; his father, Clarence Matherly; his sister, Becky Proffitt (David); his special friends, Scott Carden (Marlo) and Terry Vines (Valerie); as well as several nieces, nephews, and cousins who will remember him with love.

The family will receive friends at the home of Brenda Penix. The family will hold a service at a later date.
