Jerry Blaine Arnold, 68, of Saltville, VA, passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 31, 2025.
Jerry dedicated his life to serving others, especially children. A tireless advocate for children's causes, he gave his time, his heart, and his laughter to any child in need. He was a strong supporter of children's charities and never hesitated to step in when help was needed.
Jerry was a founding member and first captain of the Valley Rescue Squad in Hayters Gap, VA, and also served as a firefighter with the Clinch Mountain Volunteer Fire Department. His sense of duty to his community was matched only by his love for the outdoors-he found joy in camping, fishing, and hunting, especially when shared with his family.
But Jerry's greatest joy in life was his grandchildren. To them-and to countless neighborhood kids and family friends-he was simply "Papaw." He never met a stranger, had a joke ready for every occasion, and found his purpose in making others smile. His humor, warmth, and selflessness will be remembered by all who knew him.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Hugh "Doc" and Ethel Arnold; his nephew, Brian Arnold; brother-in-law, Robert "Steve" Parker; and father- and mother-in-law, Bob and Josie Parker.
Left to cherish his memory are his devoted wife of 46 years, Sharon; daughter, Joanna "Jodi" Ray and husband Kenny; son, Jason Arnold and wife Alona; and grandchildren, Zachariah "Zach" Ray and fiancée Samantha, Tyler Triplett, Haleigh Ray, and Alex Triplett. He was a beloved Papaw to many other children whose lives he touched. He is also survived by his brothers, Bobby Arnold and wife Kay, Dennis Arnold and wife Carol, and Otis Arnold; sister, Francis Thomas; brother-in-law, Scott Parker and wife Vienna; sister-in-law, Susan Cruz and husband Tolin. His best friend, Mark Arnold, whom he considered a brother, and wife Missy also survive him.
Services will be held privately.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Jerry's memory to any children's charity. His personal favorites included St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation, and Ronald McDonald Houses in Memphis and Cincinnati.
