With profound love and deep sadness, we announce that John Daniel (J.D.) Lane Jr., of Gate City, Virginia, went home to heaven on November 29, 2025, just ten days after the passing of his beloved wife of 63 years, Shirley Estella Lane. Though our hearts ache, we find comfort in knowing that J.D. is reunited not only with Shirley, the love of his life, but also with their daughter Patricia "Sissy" Lane, who passed away in March 2021, as well as his beloved dachshund, Hollie.
The thought of them together again brings peace to our grieving hearts.
Born to John D. and Lela Lane, J.D. lived a long and hardworking life defined by dedication, kindness, and an unwavering commitment to those he loved. A talented mechanic, he began his career at Kingsport Motors, later spent many years at Mason Dixon in Kingsport, and eventually continued sharing his skills at Moccasin Gap Service Center in Hiltons before retiring. J.D. had a natural gift with engines and there wasn't much he couldn't fix. He took great pride in his work.
J.D. loved rebuilding classic cars, especially his prized 1940 Ford and iconic 1956 Ford Thunderbird, which he proudly passed down to his great-grandson Wyatt Strouth. He enjoyed hunting, tinkering in his downstairs garage, and working on any project that kept his hands busy. A true jack of all trades, he was always ready to help anyone who needed him. J.D. was also a talented musician and was able to pick up any instrument and play by ear. From guitars to mandolin, violins and harmonicas, he was able to play them beautifully.
Above all, J.D.'s greatest accomplishment was his family. He is survived by his children Jeff Lane and fiancée Melanie, and Michele Lane Glover; his granddaughter Bri Strouth and husband Chris, his great-grandson Wyatt, who held a special place in his heart, and his fur babies Mollie and Gunner.
Left to cherish his memory are his brothers Swanson "Bubby" Lane and Garner Lane; his sisters Bettye Bright and husband Bill, and Nancy Daugherty and husband Steve; along with several nieces and nephews who loved him dearly.
J.D.'s passing leaves a space that cannot be filled, but his legacy of hard work, devotion, and love will remain with all who knew him. His reunion in heaven with Shirley and Sissy gives us comfort as we say goodbye.
A service honoring Shirley and JD's life will be held on in Spring of 2026. Family and friends are invited to gather, remember, and celebrate them together.
May J.D. rest in eternal peace, hand in hand once again with the loved ones who went before him.
