Mary Louella Mays, age 83, of Kingsport, Tennessee, slipped peacefully from this life into eternal rest on Thursday, August 21, 2025.
Born on May 1, 1942, in Scott County, Virginia, to Wrightly and Margaret Hammond, Mary was one of twelve beloved children. From her earliest days, she was surrounded by the strength of faith and the warmth of family, growing up listening to sermons and learning the beauty of fellowship.
Mary was a people person in the truest sense-her days were filled with conversation, laughter, and kindness. With a smile that could brighten even the darkest day, she carried joy wherever she went. She loved to sit on the porch, watching birds and butterflies dance among the flowers, taking delight in life's simple wonders. Mary was first married to Junior Martin, and later, her heart found companionship again with the late Charles Mays. She devoted much of her life to raising and caring for her children and family members, opening her home and heart as only a loving homemaker could.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Wrightly and Margaret Hammond; brothers, James, Herbert, Paul, and Garland Hammond; and sisters Hazel Matheson, Mamilee Hammond, Wilma Monroe, Wanda Fae Hammond, and Linda Sue Hammond.
Mary is survived by a loving family, her son, Travis Austin (Bobbie); her grandchildren, Leland, Devon, Dominic, and Isaiah Austin; her sisters, Margaret Elizabeth Strong and Ina Beatrice Lane; as well as many cherished nieces and nephews, including special nieces Leda Clark and Margaret Ann Good. She also leaves behind dear friends Kathy Mathis and Johnny Mack Freeman.
The family will honor Mary's life with a Celebration of Life at a later date.
