Oscar Neal Byington, 74, of Gate City, VA, went to find rest in the arms of Christ on Thursday, July 2, 2026, after a long and courageous battle with cancer.
Neal was born and raised in this area and spent his life here among the people and places he loved. He was very proud of his service in the United States Army, and that pride stayed with him throughout his life.
Neal was a hardworking man who enjoyed his work and the people he worked with. He spent around 15 years with Winegar's Flooring and over 30 years with Brown's Custom Shop. He took pride in a job well done and was always willing to lend a hand wherever he was needed.
Those who knew Neal will remember his easygoing nature, his kind heart, and his generous spirit. He never met a stranger. People would often stop just to talk with him, and he was always ready to listen. He was outgoing, considerate of others, and had a way of making people feel comfortable.
Neal loved to cut up, joke, and pull a good prank. He enjoyed solving puzzles, treasure hunting for bargains, haggling over anything he bought, and spending time around cars. He was also a true dog lover. It seemed that every dog he met loved him right back.
Above all, Neal loved his family. His children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren held a very special place in his heart.
He was preceded in death by his son, Brent Byington; parents, Neal and Paralee Hensley Byington; brothers, James Byington, Earl Byington, Roy Byington, and M.C. Byington; and sister, Joyce.
He is survived by his loving wife of 30 years, Sue Byington; daughter, Crystal Byington; step-son, Randy Collins; several grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; brothers, Willie Byington, and Harold Byington and wife Misty; sisters, Helen Maine, Gladys Fletcher, and Barbara Morelock and husband Paul; along with many other family members and friends.
A graveside service will be held at 3:00 PM on Wednesday, July 8, 2026, at Bethel Community Church Cemetery, 3430 Stanley Valley Road, Surgoinsville, TN, with Pastor Earl Hulse Jr. officiating. Military honors will be provided by American Legion Hammond Post 3 and Gate City Post 265.
Pallbearers will be Randy Collins, Travis Christian, Robbie Parsons, Johnny Morelock, Roger Byington, and Rodney Byington.
Neal fought a long, hard battle with colorectal cancer, and his family encourages everyone to get tested early.
Trinity Memorial Centers Funeral Home, 423-723-8177, is honored to serve the Byington family. Online condolences may be shared with the family at www.trinitymemorialcenters.com.
