Listen to Obituary

Peggy Sue Johnson went to be with her heavenly Father on Sunday, February 8, 2026, at NHC Healthcare in Kingsport following a period of declining health.

Sue was a native of Hiltons, VA. She was the daughter of Claude and Mary Bowlin. She was preceded in death by her husband of 39 years, Elmer Johnson, siblings Jean Wilson, Bill Bowlin, Elder John Bowlin, Jim Bowlin, and nephew Chuck Bowlin. She is survived by her son Mark (Kim) Johnson, grandchildren Isaac, Bailey, Olivia, Anna and Eli Johnson of Kingsport, TN, along with her sister Brenda (Joe) Horton of Hiltons, VA, and brother, Kenneth (Melinda) Bowlin of Greeneville, TN, several nieces and nephews that she loved dearly, and a host of friends. Times spent with family and friends were special to her and brought her great joy.

Sue was a believer in the Lord from a young age and at the end of her life was looking forward to the day that she could join her family to be with the Lord. She lived out her faith in her daily life and impacted many with her kindness and service. She was a member of Oak Grove Baptist church for over 20 years.

Sue was a graduate of Berea College in Kentucky in May 1959 and was a graduate of the University of Tennessee with a Master's Degree in Social Work in June 1966. She went to work as a social worker for the State of Tennessee in 1960 and spent the majority of her career in foster care. After retiring with 30 years of service with the State, she continued her career by helping adoptive families through Holston Home for Children for 10 years. She was also a 60 year member of the Order of the Eastern Star and was a past Grand Warden of the Grand Chapter of the state of Tennessee in 2013.

Sue loved helping others through her vocation, through service to her family and friends, through her church, and through the OES community. She would go out of her way to help someone who needed it. As an uncle said, she "probably sent out over 10,000 cards" through the years to give greetings at holidays, birthdays, anniversaries, special events, to console those who experienced loss, or to encourage those who needed it. She was an avid lover of vocal music, especially songs of the church, and sang at many funerals with her Bowlin siblings, in church choir, in quartets, in duets or solo at church for special music, and on occasion at weddings. She loved Gospel music quartets and would always be singing at home.

The Johnson family would like to extend special thanks to the CNAs, nurses, and staff of NHC Healthcare in Kingsport for their excellent care of Sue during her time there. The mutual love she experienced with the caregivers and several residents was a testament to the great people that are there and how great a place it was for her in her last 2 1/2 years while she endured many challenges from her deteriorating health. She loved many and was loved by many at NHC, and for this, we are extremely thankful.
