It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Rita Faye Hamm, who departed this life on December 29, 2025, at 5:13 AM. Born on April 27, 1963, Rita lived a life marked by resilience, love, and an unforgettable spirit that touched many. She leaves behind a legacy of strength and an enduring impact on her family and community.

Rita was a proud graduate of Science Hill High School in Johnson City, Tennessee, known as Liberty Bell at the time of her attendance. Her commitment to caring for others led her to achieve a nursing degree, a profession through which she undoubtedly offered comfort and healing to countless individuals. Beyond her professional life, Rita found joy in simple pleasures; she loved to color and draw, expressing her creativity through art. Her desire to experience the world also found expression in her love for travel, always eager to explore new horizons.

For many, Rita was more than just a family member; she was a foundational presence. Described as a "mom to many," a "sister to most," and a "daughter to some," her warmth and capacity for connection extended far beyond her immediate kin. She cherished her grandchildren dearly and loved being surrounded by her friends, making sure everyone felt her care and camaraderie. She had a unique way of making others feel seen and cared for, offering guidance and support wherever it was needed.

Rita's entrepreneurial spirit shone brightly through her ventures with her ex-husband, Ernest Hamm. Together, they owned Ernie B's, a popular bar in Johnson City, located on West Market Street. Their ambition didn't stop there; they also operated a diner where Penny's diner once stood and even ran a restaurant on the hill across from the former Masses Ear, long before the store was established decades ago. These endeavors were a testament to her hard work and dedication to building a life and creating gathering places for their community.

In recent years, Rita bravely faced and overcame significant challenges, celebrating four years of recovery from addiction. This journey was a profound testament to her unwavering courage and determination. Just a week before her passing, in a moment of deep personal reflection, she penned a note dedicating her life to the Lord. Her family takes immense comfort in knowing that she found peace and spiritual solace in her final days, and that she is now free from pain.

Rita was preceded in death by her beloved parents, Reba Casey Kyte and James Blaine Kyte, as well as her cherished sisters, Patsy Jonas Durin and Teresa Whaley, and her brother Larry Jonas. Her grandson, Elijah David Jackson Hamm, also preceded her in passing. She was a widow, having been preceded in death by her husband, Mark Hamm. Their memories will forever be held close by those who loved them.

She is survived by her loving sisters, Barbra Ann Friday and Judy Kyte, who will miss her dearly. Rita's memory will be carried on by her devoted children: Ashley Hamm, Amber Hamm, and Brittany Hamm, along with her surviving son, Jake Eugene Fagan. Her cherished grandchildren include Zachary Leach, Johnny, Noah Campbell, Lauren Hutchins, Nevaeh Hamm, Jennifer Durin, Nathan Hamm, Tiara Hamm, Megan Hamm, and Brianna Schaeffer Baes. She also leaves behind a great-grandson, Hayden Baes, as well as several nieces, nephews, and three stepchildren. Her children remember her as a complex and vibrant soul; "Mom was a hard person to get along with at times, but real easy to get along on days she felt good." This candid reflection speaks volumes about her authentic nature and the deep understanding her family had of her.

Her family finds peace in envisioning Rita now, likely "in heaven talking God's ear off," completely at rest and free from suffering. Her passing leaves a void, but also a profound gratitude for the love and unique spirit she brought into their lives.

A memorial service will be held will be announced at a later date.
