She is also survived by her special nephews, Mark Hammond (Jessica) and Anthony Estepp, and her adoptive daughter, Sheryl Nusser. Additional survivors include her brothers and sisters-in-law: Swanson "Bubby" Lane, Bettye Bright (Bill), Garner Lane, and Nancy Daugherty (Steve); as well as several nieces and nephews. Shirley is also survived by her best friend, Cathy Mullins.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Charlie and Annie Hammonds; her sisters, Sallie Hammonds, Mattie Hammond, and Thelma Estepp; her brothers, Robert Estepp and Lonnie Hammonds; and her daughter, Patricia "Sissy" Ann Lane, who was her best friend.

A celebration of Shirley's life will be held in the spring or summer of 2026, with the date to be announced. Friends and family will be invited to gather and honor her memory.

The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to the Bristol Regional Medical Center MICU and 4th Floor staff, Dr. Ezra Adams of SOFHA, her primary care physician Dr. Holly Grigsby, and the wonderful team at Clinchfield Medicine in Kingsport, TN.
