Listen to Obituary

Susan Ann Caruthers McCammon, 68, of Tennessee, was born on December 10, 1957, in Memphis. She passed away on Valentine's Day after a two-year battle with cancer, a diagnosis that came the same week she lost her husband, Barry Wade McCammon.

She was preceded in death by her parents Charles Brewster Caruthers & George Ann Edgerly Caruthers and by her husband, Barry Wade McCammon.

She is survived by her daughter, Jennifer Ann McCammon, and her grandchildren: Annika McKinley, Brendan Wade McKinley, Jonathon Cole McKinley, Noah Christopher McKinley, Katherine Ann McKinley (Kami), and William Gabriel McKinley (Gabe). She is also survived by her son, William Charles McCammon, and his daughters, Elizabeth Rose McCammon and Madison Renee McCammon. She leaves behind four siblings: Allison Holland, Evelyn Farmer, James Caruthers & Genie Poynor along with extended family and those who knew her throughout her life.

She is also lovingly remembered by her niece & her nieces husband, Katie Hames Mills & Andrew Mills and her son's fiancé, Destiny Laster, who helped care for her in her later years and at the end of her life.

Susan was strong-willed, outspoken, and unapologetically herself. She carried firm convictions and did not shy away from expressing them. She could be sharp and humorous in equal measure, stubborn and fiercely determined. Those who knew her understood that loving her meant understanding her strength.

She was a lifelong writer and journal keeper, filling notebooks with her thoughts and stories. She loved antiques, collectibles, Fenton glass, and preserving family heirlooms that spanned generations. She crocheted with passion, painted ceramics & canvases alike. She enjoyed classic films especially old Hollywood favorites like It's a Wonderful Life and movies featuring Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn and could quote them flawlessly. She loved coffee, Nutty Bars, peanut M&Ms and long drives to anywhere with Elvis drifting through the speakers while singing along with her husband.

Susan often said she preferred children once they were old enough to explore and have adventures with her, and she enjoyed sharing experiences with her grandchildren in her own way (usually involving something chocolate covered, mint flavored or some variation of soda floats).

She identified as Christian and carried her faith throughout her life. In her final years, she endured illness with grit and determination, missing her husband deeply after his passing.

There will be no formal services.

In lieu of flowers, donations to assist with final expenses may be made directly to the family.

Susan's legacy lives on in the stories she wrote, the heirlooms she preserved, the strong personalities she helped shape, and the generations who carry her name and memory forward.
